What makes a GST invoice legally valid?

Under the CGST Act, 2017, a valid tax invoice must include supplier and recipient GSTIN, a unique invoice number, HSN/SAC codes, taxable value, and the applicable GST amount broken out by slab.

  • Supplier GSTIN, name & address
  • Recipient GSTIN & address
  • Unique invoice number & date
  • HSN/SAC codes per line item
  • CGST + SGST or IGST breakdown
  • Place of supply
  • Authorized signature

How CGST & SGST are calculated

For intra-state supplies, the GST rate is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). On a taxable amount of ₹10,000 at 18% GST — CGST = ₹900 and SGST = ₹900, totalling ₹11,800.

Our generator computes CGST and SGST per line item, so you can handle invoices with mixed tax rates on a single document. The grand total is also displayed in words — a common requirement for Indian business invoices.

Tip: For inter-state sales, IGST applies instead of CGST + SGST. Note the place of supply in your invoice.
