How geography is recorded in the Indian Trademark Registry
Every trademark application filed in India includes the applicant's address of record, from which the state or Union Territory is derived. The IP India Registry processes applications through five regional offices — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad — but the applicant's registered address (not the filing office) determines the state shown here.
Maharashtra, Delhi, and Gujarat consistently top the filing charts, reflecting India's concentration of registered businesses in these states. High filing volumes correlate strongly with MSME density, manufacturing activity, and the scale of organised retail and service industries in a state.
The registration rate — the share of filings that reach “Registered” status — varies by state and gives insight into the quality of applications and attorney adoption. States with higher MSME formalisation and larger IP law ecosystems tend to show stronger registration completion rates.
