Introduction

CRO stands for Compulsory Registration Order under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order. Until now 7 phases of CROs have been issued by the MeitY (Ministery of Electronics and Information Technology), these CROs mandate compulsory registration of manufacturers, dealers and other such parties who are involved in selling, storing, importing and distributing any product mentioned in any of the CRO Phases with the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)

In this article, we will learn particularly about the CRO Phase V, which was issued in the year 2020. This particular CRO is concerned with electronic products such as wireless microphones, digital cameras, speakers, LED products and dimmers.

Objectives of BIS & CRO

BIS is a statutory body under the BIS Act of 2016. The main objectives of BIS are as follows:

  • Harmonious development of activities, which can ensure the standardisation and quality of various goods manufactured, sold or distributed in India.
  • BIS is responsible for formulating and promoting Indian Standards. As of now, more than 20000 standards have been developed by BIS.
  • BIS facilitates product certifications, which ensure that a product is safe, reliable and complies with quality standards.
  • Such certifications are done to gain the confidence of customers as it signifies that the product has met the established criteria.
  • Generally, these certifications are voluntary. But for some products such as milk, drinking water, LPG etc their respective certifications are made mandatory as they are directly concerned with the health and safety of the general public.
  • ISI Mark, Agmark, BIS Hallmark, ISO etc are all examples of BIS product certifications

Furthermore, CROs are simply the framework put in place by the MeitY for the upliftment of the electronics and information technology sector in India. In 2012 an order named Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) was issued, which made it compulsory for every manufacturer, dealer, importer and distributor of listed electronic items to register with the BIS. It issues the licence, which authorises these parties to conduct their individual operations. Each CRO contains a set of guidelines for some particular electronic products.

CRO Phase V Electronic Products

Phase V CRO was issued in 2020, it provides a set of guidelines for specific electronic products. The categories of products are as follows:

  • Wireless Microphones
  • Digital Camera
  • Video Camera
  • Webcam
  • Smart Speakers With and Without Display
  • Bluetooth Speakers
  • Dimmers for LED products

CRO Phase V Guidelines

The guidelines applicable to all the above mentioned products as per CRO Phase V are as follows:

  • They should be the same as built-in or external transmitters such as handheld, headset etc
  • Should be made up of the same enclosed material. However decorative parts can be of different material
  • No change in aesthetics and location of buttons should be accepted. However, if tests ensure that such changes don’t affect safety, then they may be accepted.
  • Should have the same PCB design and layout
  • Should have the same IP rating for the transmitter and mic
  • Should have the same input voltage
  • Should have the same battery rating
  • Should have the same charging type
  • If any registered adapter or power bank then the same output rating should be ensured
  • Note: Only 10 models can be included in any series for all the above-mentioned product categories

Conclusion

In conclusion, frameworks like CRO are essential for ensuring the safety and quality standards of various products. They facilitate standardisation and assure the customers about the quality, reliability and proper safety of the products. All this is achieved by doing product certifications as per the formulated standards of the BIS. All businesses should get their eligible products certified. It brings many benefits such as customer confidence, compliance with standards and regulations, product testing and client satisfaction.
