Lost your PAN card and don’t know what to do? Take a breath! More than 2 lakh Indians request duplicate PAN cards monthly – so you’re not the only one! The card might be gone, but your financial identity is perfectly safe!

Your PAN number remains the same forever, even if you get 20 duplicate cards. Applying for a duplicate PAN card is easy—just a few simple clicks and you’re done! Let’s know how a duplicate PAN card differs from the original PAN card.

What is a Duplicate PAN Card?

A duplicate or reprint PAN card is an official copy of your existing PAN card. It has the same PAN (Permanent Account Number). Your 10-digit alphanumeric PAN number remains exactly the same.

When Do You Need To Apply For A Duplicate PAN Card?

You might need to apply for a duplicate PAN card in several situations:

  • Loss of PAN Card: If you have lost your PAN card. It’s wise to apply for a new one immediately.
  • Damage to PAN Card: When your card is physically damaged. This could be due to wear and tear.
  • Misplacement of PAN Card: If you’ve simply misplaced your card and cannot find it.
  • Requirement of a physical card: Even if you know your PAN number. Sometimes a physical card is needed.

You can apply for a duplicate card anytime, and multiple times if needed, as long as your details with the Income Tax Department remain valid and unchanged.

Who Can Apply For a Duplicate PAN Card?

Anyone or any entity that already holds a valid PAN can apply for a duplicate. This includes:

  • Individuals: Indian citizens, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), and even foreign nationals who have been allotted a PAN.
  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs): A family entity recognized under tax laws.
  • Companies: Private limited, public limited, etc.
  • Firms/Partnerships: Including Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs).
  • Trusts, Associations of Persons (AOPs), Bodies of Individuals (BOIs), Artificial Juridical Persons, Local Authorities.

The process is generally similar, though documentation for entities might differ slightly from individuals.

Documents Required for a Duplicate PAN Card

Whether applying online or offline, you’ll generally need the following:

For Individuals:

  • Online with Aadhaar e-KYC: No physical documents needed – just PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
  • Online without Aadhaar e-KYC/Offline: Copy of PAN card or allotment letter; if unavailable, POI, POA, and PODB may be required.

For Other Entities (Companies, HUFs, Firms):

  • Copy of the existing PAN card or allotment letter

How to Apply for a Duplicate PAN Card Online?

Applying online is the most convenient way to get your duplicate PAN card. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Visit the TIN-NSDL Website

Head over to the official website of TIN-NSDL at www.tin-nsdl.com. Look for the option related to “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)” under Online PAN Services. (Refer to the image below)

2. Fill in the Application Form

You will need to fill out an online application form. Key details to provide include:

  • Your existing 10-digit PAN number (ensure this is entered correctly).
  • Your name, date of birth/incorporation, mobile number, and email address as per your existing PAN records.
  • Select the option for “Reprint of PAN card (No changes in existing PAN Data)”.

3. Choose Your Mode of Document Submission

You’ll be presented with a few options for submitting your application and documents:

  • Physical Submission: You can submit the generated acknowledgment along with physical documents.
  • E-KYC & e-Sign (Aadhaar-based): This is a paperless option where your Aadhaar details are used for KYC, and the application is e-signed.
  • Submit Scanned Images through e-Sign: You can upload scanned copies of your photograph, signature, and supporting documents, and then e-sign the application.

4. Payment of Fees

The fee amount will depend on whether you require a physical PAN card or only an e-PAN (electronic PAN), and also on the communication address (within India or outside India). Payment can be made online via net banking, credit/debit card, or demand draft.

5. Acknowledgment and Tracking

Once you submit the application and make the payment, a 15-digit acknowledgment number will be generated. Keep this number safe. You can use it to track the status of your application on the TIN-NSDL website.

How to Apply for a Duplicate PAN Card: The Offline Process

If you prefer the traditional method, you can apply for a duplicate PAN card offline:

1. Download the Application Form

Download the “Request for New PAN Card Or/And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data” form from the NSDL e-Gov or UTIITSL website. This is the same form used for new PAN applications and corrections.

2. Fill in the Form

Carefully fill in all the required details. Your existing PAN must be mentioned at the top of the form. You will also need to affix two recent passport-sized photographs in the space provided and sign across one of them.

3. Submission of Form and Documents

Submit the filled form with self-attested ID, address, and PAN proof to the nearest NSDL or UTIITSL center, or post it to their office.

Postal Address for NSDL:
Protean eGov Technologies Limited
5th Floor, Mantri Sterling,
Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8,
Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk,
Pune – 411016, Maharashtra, India.

4. Payment of Fees

Pay the applicable fees via a demand draft (in favor of ‘NSDL – PAN’ or ‘UTIITSL’) or cash at the counter (if submitting in person).

How to Apply For a Duplicate PAN Card Without Changes?

This is the most straightforward scenario. When applying online:

  • Carefully choose the option that explicitly states “Reprint PAN Card” or “Request for PAN card without any changes in data.”
  • Do not fill in any fields that are meant for updating or correcting information.
  • The system will primarily use your PAN number to fetch existing data. This ensures your application is processed quickly, avoiding the need for extra documents associated with data corrections.

This is the easiest way to get a duplicate PAN card if the details are current.

How to Track Your Duplicate PAN Card Application Status?

You can easily monitor the progress of your application with the acknowledgment number:

  • When you submit your application (online or offline), you receive an acknowledgment slip containing a unique 15-digit acknowledgment number.
  • Go to the NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL portal. Look for a section like “Track PAN Status” or “Check duplicate PAN card status.”
  • Enter your acknowledgment number as prompted.
  • The system will display the current status of your application, such as “Under Verification,” “PAN Allotted/Under Printing,” or “Dispatched with Airway Bill Number.”

This tracking facility helps you stay informed about your application’s status.

How to Download e-PAN Card Online?

If you’ve lost or damaged your PAN card, you don’t need to wait for a physical replacement. You can quickly get a duplicate one online through authorized portals. Here’s how:

1. Visit the Official Portal: Visit the official NSDL or UTIITSL portal, depending on which agency issued your duplicate PAN card.

2. Enter Your Details: Input your PAN, date of birth, and Aadhaar number (if linked). Complete the captcha.

3. Verify with OTP: NSDL will send an OTP to your registered mobile number or email. Enter it to continue.

4. Download Your Duplicate PAN Card: After successful verification, you can download your card instantly in PDF format.

Note: The PDF is password-protected. Use your date of birth (DDMMYYYY) as the password.

Things to Remember

Losing your PAN card doesn’t mean losing your PAN number—here’s what to keep in mind when applying for a duplicate.

  • Same Number: A duplicate PAN card will always have your original PAN number. You cannot get a new PAN number if you lose your card.
  • Legal Prohibition: Holding more than one PAN is illegal and can attract a Rs. 10,000 penalty under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, as it may lead to tax evasion or financial manipulation.
  • Accuracy is Key: Ensure all details in the application form match your existing PAN records to avoid delays or rejection.
  • Acknowledgment Slip: Keep the acknowledgment receipt safe until you receive your duplicate card.
  • Dispatch Address: The physical PAN card will be sent to the communication address mentioned in your application.
  • Processing Time and Delivery: A physical duplicate PAN card is usually dispatched within 2 weeks, with delivery depending on your location. You get e-PAN within a few hours to 1–2 days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Will I get a new PAN number with the duplicate card?

No, you will not receive a new PAN number. A duplicate PAN card is simply a reissued copy of your original card with the same PAN number. Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is unique and stays the same for life, and the duplicate is only a replacement of the physical one, not the number.

2. When should I apply for a duplicate PAN card?

You should apply for a duplicate PAN card if your original card has been lost, stolen, misplaced, torn, damaged beyond use, or if the physical copy is illegible. You may also request a duplicate if you want a reprinted card due to wear and tear, even though your PAN number and details remain unchanged.

3. Can I apply for a duplicate PAN card online?

Yes, you can easily apply for a duplicate PAN card online through NSDL (www.tin-nsdl.com) or UTIITSL (www.pan.utiitsl.com) portal. The process involves filling out a form, uploading scanned copies of required documents, paying the applicable fee, and receiving the e-PAN via email or the physical card by post.

4. What documents are required to apply for a duplicate PAN card?

To apply for a duplicate PAN card, you must submit self-attested copies of:

  • Proof of Identity (e.g., Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport)
  • Proof of Address (e.g., utility bill, driving license)
  • Proof of existing PAN (if available, such as a photocopy or old scan)

These documents help verify your identity and ensure that the PAN is issued to the rightful applicant.

5. How long does it take to receive a duplicate PAN card?

An e-PAN usually takes a few hours to 1–2 working days after successful application and verification. The physical PAN card is usually dispatched within 10–15 days, and final delivery depends on the postal services and your location.
