India is one of the largest food producers in the world, so the quality and safety of farm products matter to everyone, from farmers to households. The Agmark license makes sure that food items are pure, safe, and of good quality.
The Agmark license is an official certificate issued by the Government of India. It proves that agricultural products like grains, pulses, spices, and oils meet fixed standards. The Agmark logo on a product means it has passed strict tests for quality and purity.
While the Agmark license is voluntary for most agricultural products, certain items are mandated by law to carry this certification. According to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sale) Regulations, 2011, Agmark certification is mandatory for specific products like:
- Blended Edible Vegetable Oils
- Fat Spread
- Carvia Callosa
- Honey Dew
- Kangra Tea
- Til Oil (Sesame Oil)
- Ghee
- Light Black Pepper
Obtaining an FSSAI license for these products can accelerate the Agmark certification process, ensuring that your business complies with both food safety and quality standards.
The Agmark system is designed to build trust across the supply chain, ensuring that buyers, sellers, and consumers can rely on the quality of the products they deal with.
The Agricultural Produce Act of 1937
In 1937, India passed the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act to establish a standardized system for grading farm products. Before this legislation, the lack of a standard quality check often allowed poor-quality products to reach the market.
With this Act, the government made rules for judging and marking farm products. The Agmark system came from this Act. The system still protects farmers from receiving low prices for high-quality goods while also keeping consumers safe from poor or unsafe food.
While the Act has been amended over the years, its core goal of ensuring quality and safety has remained constant. It wants to make sure Indian farm products are safe, clean, and of good quality.
Who Issues the Agmark License?
The Agmark license is issued by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), a division under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. With offices across the country, the DMI oversees testing labs that evaluate the quality of food products.
To use the Agmark logo, businesses must apply to the DMI. The authority then inspects the unit, tests the products in approved labs, and grants the license if all quality standards and rules are met.
